The Experience
of Psychotherapy
If
you've never been in therapy before, you may feel nervous
about getting involved. It may help you to know that you are
the expert on your life and that you are always in the driver's
seat. Your therapist will offer ideas, hypotheses, and feedback
for you to consider. But you are the one who decides if the
therapist is right or not.
Always
remember that you have the right not to tell the therapist
something (although this may inhibit the therapy), the right
to disagree with him, and the right to end therapy at any
time. Probably the best way to understand what therapy is
like is to ask a friend who has been in therapy. Hopefully
he has had a good experience (most do) and can clue you in.
But you should also know that everyone's therapy is different.

challenge of figuring out what they are all about, but don't necessarily
expect change. Of course, most people come to therapy because they
are experiencing some feelings that are difficult to shake and they
want to get rid of them.
Therapy
is a resource. I hope you will use it in whatever way works for
you. Sometimes a person seeking therapy will "audition" therapists.
He may see two or three therapists for an initial session before
he picks one. This is certainly a fair way to go about things. Every
therapist has had the experience of not being chosen. (We get over
it!) If you have further questions about therapy in general, or
the particular way I do therapy, I hope you will give me a call.
I have offices in Pasadena and West Hollywood. My numbers are 323.
936.7839 (West Hollywood) or 626.440.9898 ext. 2 (Pasadena).
Therapy
is really about self-discovery. If you're interested, I hope you'll
get started today.
